  • Heart Health Hack: Nutrition Response Testing

February is heart health month and it’s no wonder with statistics like these taken from The Heart Foundation: Heart disease is the number one cause of death in the United States Cardiovascular diseases claim more lives than all forms of cancer combined In the U.S. someone has a heart attack every 34 seconds In the U.S. every 60 seconds someone dies from a heart disease-related event Direct and indirect costs of heart disease total more than $320.1 billion Heart disease is the number one killer of women An estimated 43 million women in the U.S. are affected by heart disease Since 1984, more women than men have died each year from heart disease What has happened to people and why is it that we have such high statistics? This generation of people has been tolerating symptoms like: High Blood pressure Fatigue Irregular heartbeat High cholesterol Arthritis Shortness of breath Leg cramping during sleep Restless legs It’s no surprise that these things have increased since the later half of the 20th century when the medical community and dietitians began recommending low-fat diets and began saying how dangerous cholesterol is. In the book Diet & Heart Disease by Stephen Byrnes, Ph.D. RNCP, he says: “Saturated fats lower the blood levels of the artery-damaging lipoprotein and elevate HDL levels which are needed for proper calcium utilization in the bones and provide a good energy source for vital organs. They stimulate the immune system, protect the liver, do not initiate free radical formation and are non-irritating to the arterial walls. Omitting them from one’s diet, then, is poor advice.” He goes on to say, “Cholesterol is needed by the body to manufacture an array of hormones as well as contribute to the structural integrity of the cell wall. Cholesterol is also needed for the proper function of serotonin receptors in the brain. Serotonin is what makes us “feel” good. This is why low cholesterol levels are associated with higher rates of depression, suicide and aggressive behavior.” He then talks about how important cholesterol is to the function of the brain, the health of our intestines as well as the development of our brain and nervous system. The food we eat is definitely taking its toll on our bodies and in a way that is undeniably dangerous. What can we do? Many have found Nutrition Response Testing has allowed them to get their lives back. Dorothy age 59 had been being treated for high blood pressure. She was overweight but not obese. She started experiencing the side effects of the drug, i.e. fatigue, numbness in her feet, dry eyes and flaking skin. She didn’t want to live with those symptoms for the rest of her life so she did some Nutrition Response Testing and agreed to a few changes. Here is what she said shortly after. “I had high blood pressure, recorded at 186/96 and climbing. I had low energy and was tired all the time. After one week of starting the program, my blood pressure was recorded at 137/82. My energy improved. I’m not so tired even though I was getting less sleep due to working the night shift. Now I mentally want to get up and get going and exercise!” She also lost weight as an added benefit! She took the high blood pressure as a warning sign to determine what was wrong. If you or someone you love has suffered with the symptoms mentioned at the beginning of this article, click here to schedule an appointment with me. Many of my patients have found relief of their symptoms and have gained their lives back.

  • How Nutrition Response Testing Helped My Family

I thought I had a good pregnancy with my first child. I didn’t have any morning sickness. The only thing with this first pregnancy was that I found milk gave me a stomachache, so I avoided milk. I continued to eat cheese and other dairy products because they didn’t seem to bother my stomach. Other than needing to avoid milk, my first pregnancy went very well. I gave birth to a healthy 7 pounds, 8 oz baby boy. He was only 4 days early. I didn’t use any drugs while I was in labor. I also didn’t have any tearing during the delivery. Although my son was born at a normal weight, he was very slow to gain weight. I continued to nurse him, but at 9 months he was given formula for the first time while I was out of town for a week-long training. It turns out my breast milk was missing an enzyme so that when it is frozen, it turns sour. After taking this formula, he became sick. He got better after I returned home and started nursing again. Even when we started him on real food, he was never a very good eater. Then he got sick again when he started daycare when he turned one. We had tried to switch him to cow’s milk. Most people will say that kids always get sick the first time they start daycare or school, so we didn’t think anything of it. Even at 1, he was still barely on the growth charts. By May of 2012, he had already had at least 3 sinuses infections. Our medical doctor had sent us to Mayo to have a pediatric endocrinologist, pediatric GI doctor, and an allergist look at him. While we were there, he spiked a fever and had to stay overnight in the hospital. The doctors had diagnosed him with failure to thrive. Those are pretty scary words to anyone, especially first-time parents. I had decided that enough was enough. I connected an NRT doctor that evaluated myself and my son. She found that dairy, corn, and rice were huge contributing factors to his overall health. Although he was at the bottom (or even under) of the growth chart, he continued to hit the rest of his developmental milestones. His teachers keep saying that he is the brightest kid in the class. Once we removed certain foods from his diet, his sinus infections have greatly improved. We now have a small supplement protocol that he takes on a daily basis that is still helping to rebuild his gut. He is now a much happier, healthier kid who actually enjoys food and life in general. I would encourage anyone with kids to have them evaluated by Nutrition Response Testing doctor.

  • Aroma Freedom Technique

Have you ever wondered why certain smells trigger emotions or memories? Whether something we have smelled before or something new, there are three major factors when we smell: The Olfactory Bulb, the Amygdala, and the Hippocampus. The Olfactory Bulb is in simplest terms our smell receptor, this is the part of our brain that processes odors from the nasal cavity. There are direct lines from the Olfactory Bulb to the Amygdala and the Hippocampus. The Amygdala is our brain’s emotional center located in the cerebral hemisphere and the Hippocampus, located in the temporal lobe, plays a major role in both learning and memory. Aroma Freedom Technique (AFT) is a technique that uses pure essential oils and proven psychological principles to trigger the Olfactory, Amygdala, and Hippocampus. It has been discovered that by using the combination of feelings, thoughts, sensations, and imagination while smelling specific Young Living essential oils can provide relief to the memory and emotional complex of individuals. This allows the person to become liberated from the emotional effects of negative experiences in their past. But it does not stop there, this technique can be used for goal setting, stress reduction, relief from painful memories, and overall mental and emotional balance. AFT is a technique that uses the power of scent to gently shift awareness away from negative thoughts, feelings, and memories, to initiate a positive outlook and attitude. This results in greater confidence and inner freedom. When we are no longer stuck in negative mindsets, we are free to create the life we desire. This twelve-step process is yet another tool you can use to help you release emotions and memories that are holding you back and allow you to move forward. It is a simple process that starts with setting an intention or goal you would like to achieve; one you do not believe is very attainable. You rate your intention on a scale of 1 to 10 and move through a series of steps incorporating your essential oils, which will allow you to move through different emotions that are limiting you. Dr. Lisa recently began offering this technique as one of the services in our office. We have seen many individuals greatly benefit from Aroma Freedom Technique, including ourselves. If this is something that interests you or you feel you can benefit from, please give us a call. Aroma Freedom Technique is one of our services that can also be done through virtual appointments. If you don’t have your own Young Living essential oils at home, we will send you the ones you’ll need prior to your appointment. You can use quite common oils such as Stress Away, Frankincense, Lavender, Lemon, Peppermint, and Thieves to help tap into these deep memories and emotions and release them to foster growth. You can also use favorites like Inner Child, Release, Transformation, and Believe. If you are interested in purchasing Young Living oils, you can click here.

  • Frankie’s (Mumbai Burrito) Recipe

A delicious recipe for Frankie’s – India’s street food, also called a Mumbai Burrito. Filled with curried potatoes, roasted cauliflower and chickpeas, spinach, cilantro mint chutney and pickled onions. Vegan! Gluten Free adaptable. Ingredients Curry Mashed Potatoes: 16 ounces baby potatoes – quartered 1 tablespoon ghee, olive oil or coconut oil, more to taste ¾ teaspoon kosher salt 2-3 teaspoons yellow curry powder 1 teaspoon granulated onion or granulated garlic powder ( you could also incorporate sautéed onion and garlic into the potatoes for more flavor) Filling: 1 head cauliflower- cut into small florets 1 can chickpeas, rinsed and drained well 1-2 tablespoons olive oil 1 ½ teaspoons kosher salt 1 tablespoon coriander 1 tablespoon cumin generous pinch chili flakes 1 teaspoon whole fennel seed ( optional, or use cumin seed or coriander seed) 1 teaspoon whole coriander seed (optional) 4 extra large, whole wheat tortillas – or feel free to use Gluten Free wraps or tortillas, or Gluten Free bowls using the mashed potatoes and extra spinach and the base. 2 handfuls baby spinach Few tablespoons Cilantro Mint Chutney (recipe below) Few tablespoons Quick Pickled Onions (recipe below) Instructions Preheat oven to 425 F Cut potatoes and place them in a medium pot, covered with water and simmer until very tender, about 15-20 minutes. At the same time… Cut the cauliflower into small florets and place on a parchment lined sheet pan ( to one side). Add the drained chickpeas to the other side. Drizzle both with olive oil. Sprinkle cauliflower and chickpeas with the spices and salt, tossing to coat well. Place in the oven and roast for 20-25 minutes ( tossing halfway throuth) or until cauliflower is tender. While the veggies are roasting, make the quick pickled red onions and blend up the flavorful Cilantro Mint Chutney, and place both in jars ( Of course, you could make these ahead). They take about 5 minutes each. Please don’t leave out the chutney- it’s imperative!!! Once the potatoes are very tender, drain but save about 1 cup of the hot water. Place the potatoes back in the pot and mash with some of the hot water ( start with ¼-½ cup ) salt, spices and ghee ( or oil) and mash the potatoes to combine until smooth. You want a fairly loose, spreadable mash so add more hot water if necessary. Scrape down the sides. Stir well. Taste. You want this to taste flavorful and slightly salty as the tortilla will mute some of the flavor. Feel free to add more ghee or oil as you please for extra richness. Cover and keep warm. When the roasted veggies are done, assemble. Warm the tortillas either in the oven, over a gas flame or over grill. Spread generously with the Potato curry, then top with chickpeas, cauliflower making sure to get some of the whole spices that will have dropped to the bottom of the pan. Add a handful of spinach leaves, a few teaspoons of cilantro mint chutney and some pickled onions and roll up like a burrito. Keep warm in the oven until ready to serve, or serve immediately! You can also refrigerate and reheat for meals on the go. Quick Pickled Onions Ingredients ½ a red onion, very thinly sliced 1 cup red wine vinegar ½ cup water 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon sugar (or honey or another substitute) 1 teaspoon whole spices (optional- one or any combination of fennel seed, cumin, coriander, peppercorns, caraway, star anise) Instructions Thinly slice ½ a red onion. Place the onion along with the red wine vinegar, water, salt, sugar and whole spices in a small pot on the stove and bring to a simmer. Simmer 2-3 minutes, stirring. Remove from the stove and let cool. Place onions and liquid in a jar and store in the fridge, for up to 2 months. Quick Cilantro Mint Chutney Ingredients ½ cup yogurt, (see notes for vegan version) 3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice 1 bunch cilantro, tender stems ok 1 cup mint leaves, packed (2 x .75-ounce packages) 1 medium jalapeno, sliced 2 teaspoons sliced ginger 1 garlic clove ¼-½teaspoon kosher salt, ½ teaspoon sugar (or alternative like honey, palm sugar, etc) 1 tablespoon water, or just enough to get blender going Instructions Blend all ingredients in a blender or food processor until smooth. Taste and adjust salt and lemon. To make this thicker, feel free to add desiccated coconut or peanuts Notes If you would like to make this vegan – either sub coconut or soy yogurt, or silken tofu. If using silken tofu, you might want to add 1 tablespoon olive oil and for sure, more salt and lemon. For more healthy and fun recipes, Please visit our recipe page! • Recycling Plastic Bags, Packaging, and Packing Material

We here at Humfeld Chiropractic and Nutrition Center care not only about our physical and mental health but also our environment. Near and dear to us is the ever-growing problem of plastic bags not being recycled properly or worse, not at all. We would like to bring some light to this problem and make a positive impact on improving recycling. Plastic bags are a huge problem. Not everyone is aware that most county recycling centers do not accept plastic packaging or plastic bags in the recycling totes. Why is it important to recycle plastic bags? Plastic bags are not biodegradable. They will outlive both you and me. They release chemicals, contaminate our soil and water, and remain intact for hundreds or even thousands of years. Recycling them helps our environment (and ourselves) in several ways. 1. Reduces Oil Consumption Plastic bags are made from crude oil derivatives or natural gas. This means, the more plastic bags are manufactured, the more non-renewable fossils fuels will be consumed. Recycling plastic bags can cut back on oil consumption significantly. Did you know recycling 1 ton of plastic bags saves crude oil equivalent to 16.3 barrels? 2. Reduces Waste Since plastic bags do not biodegrade, they will always exist whether it’s in a landfill or the ocean. If you haven’t taken a visit to your local county landfill, please do so to learn the magnitude of this problem. Recycling used plastic bags significantly decreases the amount of waste that goes to landfills. Most often this waste ends up in waterways and the ocean. Unfortunately, landfills play a major role in the destruction of our environment but recycling plastic bags helps reduce land and water pollution. 3. Reduces Energy Consumption The process of making plastic bags is long and complicated. It consumes a significant amount of energy. Although recycling plastic bags uses energy as well, (they must be cleaned, shredded, melted and remolded) the energy required is relatively less than what it takes to make a fresh plastic bag. Fact: recycling 1 ton of plastic bags saves the electric energy equivalent to 5,774 kilowatts/hour! 4. Encourages Sustainable Use The recycling of plastic bags promotes careful and sustainable use. Recycling plastic bags is easier than you think. In almost all counties (including here in Rice County,) we have plastic bag recycling bins at HyVee and Walmart. Consumers place approved plastic bags in the bins which are then collected by Trex Recycling. They are then made into beautiful outdoor materials, such as composite decking. Visit Trex Recycling to learn more about how your business or school can partake! But wait! It’s not just recycling plastic shopping bags! These In-Store Recycling Bins accept much more than shopping bags. Here’s a list of other plastic bags to bring along with: Newspaper sleeves, bread bags, softener salt bags, produce wrappers, cereal box bag liners, ice bags, Ziploc bags, packaging air pillows, bubble wrap, plastic pet food bags…) Don’t throw these out in your waste side trash! Bring it with (clean, dry and all bundled up in 1 bag) and drop off the next time you are grocery shopping! Packaging Air bubbles, bubble wrap, plastic padded mailer, plastic envelope mailers Tortilla shell wrapper, inner cereal bag, frozen food outer wrap, bread bag, produce bag, potato bag, apple bag All the above plastic bag materials should be recycled at your local store drop-off site! • Creamy Cauliflower Alfredo

Oh my goodness, a healthier Alfredo option that is vegan (if you choose)! This recipe still offers a good amount of healthy fats but fewer calories. Go ahead and give it a try on your favorite pasta or any gluten free or spiral veggie noodles. Ingredients: 12 oz. Cauliflower florets 1 tsp. coconut oil, or butter 1 C. Water 2 Cloves garlic, minced 1/2 tsp. Himalayan salt, more or less to taste. Pinch of black pepper, more or less to taste. Instructions: Sauté the minced garlic in the oil or butter in a small saucepan over low heat. Cook for a few minutes, until the garlic is tender and fragrant, but not browned. Add the 1 C. of water to the saucepan, along with the cauliflower then bring to a boil. (The water will not cover the cauliflower and that’s okay.) Once the water is boiling reduce the heat to a simmer and cover the pot for 8-10 minutes, until the cauliflower is fork-tender. Transfer the entire contents of the saucepan into a blender or food processor, and season with salt and pepper. Process until very smooth and creamy, with a texture similar to traditional cream sauces. Season with salt and pepper if desired, and serve hot.

  • What Happens To Your Body 1 Hour After Eating A Big Mac?

McDonalds’; The Golden Arches; The American Icon. It’s a fast and easy pit stop when you’re on the road, in a rush, or just want a quick pick-me-up, but exactly what happens to your body after you eat McDonald’s? For example: a Big Mac. In the first 10 minutes: Junk food triggers your brain’s reward system by releasing much more ‘feel-good’ chemicals, such as the neurotransmitter dopamine, which ignites feelings of pleasure. This process works in a similar way for drugs and contributes to the likelihood of compulsive eating. After 20 minutes: Did you know that the Big Mac bun has high levels of high fructose corn syrup and sodium? Both ingredients are addictive and make your body crave more. These ingredients are also so harmful that they can cause obesity, diabetes and heart disease. After 30 minutes: A Big Mac has 970 milligrams of sodium. This huge amount of salt can cause dehydration. A sodium overdose makes your heart work faster to pump blood through your veins. This causes high blood pressure and can ultimately lead to heart diseases and strokes. After 40 minutes: Are you still feeling hungry after just having a Big Mac? This is because you have lost control over your blood sugar, making you crave even more fast food. The first time you consume a high calorie meal, your insulin response can bring down your glucose levels making you want to eat more. After 60 minutes: Normally the body takes about 24-72 hours to digest food. However, hamburgers take a lot more time because they are greasier. It can take more than 3 days to fully digest a Big Mac. It takes approximately 51 days to digest trans-fats. The Big Mac contains 1.5 grams of trans fat. Studies have proved that trans fats can be linked to heart diseases, obesity, cancer and diabetes. As you can see, a Big Mac can do a lot of harm to your body, and that’s just a Big Mac! Most will add on a large Coke and a side of fries with that order too… Even though fast food is easy and convenient, the harm these foods can do to your body is not worth it in the long run.

  • Statins and Diabetes

November is Diabetes Awareness Month. Diabetes affects over 29 million in the United States. There are different types of diabetes that a person can have. Type 1 Diabetes (aka Insulin Dependent Diabetes) *Juvenile onset diabetes *Autoimmune disease *The body does not produce insulin *5% of people with diabetes have this type *Beta cells of pancreas are attacked by the misdirected immune system. Type 2 Diabetes (aka Non-Insulin Dependent Diabetes) *Adult onset diabetes *The body does produce insulin, but does so inadequately for the body’s needs. *90-95% of people with diabetes have this type Gestational Diabetes *High blood glucose levels during pregnancy *Usually affects the mother in late pregnancy around weeks 20-24. *Pancreas works overtime to produce insulin, but the insulin doesn’t lower the high blood glucose levels. If you have diabetes, your blood glucose, or blood sugar, levels are too high. Over time, this can cause problems with other body functions, such as your kidneys, nerves, feet and eyes. Having diabetes can also put you at a higher risk for heart disease and bone and joint disorders. Other long-term complications of diabetes include skin problems, digestive problems, sexual dysfunction, and problems with your teeth and gums. In a study of nearly 26,000 beneficiaries of Tricare, the military health system, those taking statin drugs to control their cholesterol were 87 percent more likely to develop diabetes. The research confirms past findings on the link between the widely prescribed drugs and diabetes risk. But it is among the first to show the connection in a relatively healthy group of people. The study included only people who at baseline were free of heart disease, diabetes, and other severe chronic disease. • Citrus Grilled Shrimp with Zoodles

This delicious, fresh citrus grilled shrimp with zucchini noodles makes the perfect, healthy, lunch or dinner! It is great served either warm or cold, topped with a cilantro, lime, and orange vinaigrette! Gluten free, Paleo, and Whole 30. Ingredients: For the vinaigrette: 1.5 tsp. lime zest 1.5 tsp. orange zest 3-4 garlic cloves, minced 2 tbsp. cilantro 2 tbsp. freshly squeezed lime juice 1.5 tbsp. freshly squeezed orange juice 6 tbsp. olive oil 1/2 – 3/4 tsp. sea salt 1/4 tsp. black pepper For the shrimp and zucchini noodles: 1 lb. shrimp, peeled and deveined 3-4 medium sized zucchini, spiralized extra cilantro to garnish Directions: To create the vinaigrette, whisk ingredients together in a bowl, except for olive oil, then slowly add the olive oil in while whisking. Pour the dressing into a container, and reserve 3 Tbsp of the dressing to marinate the shrimp. Cover and marinate in the refrigerator for at least one hour. The rest of the dressing should be covered and refrigerated until ready to use. Spiralize your zucchini and “sweat” them by placing in a strainer over a bowl, and sprinkling with sea salt. This will release much of the water over the course of an hour, after which you can drain them and squeeze out excess water with paper towels. The zucchini can sweat while the shrimp marinates. Once ready to grill, turn the grill on high. Shake off excess marinade from the shrimp and discard, only leaving a light coating of marinade on the shrimp. Season shrimp with a bit of sea salt and pepper, then put them on the grill. Grill shrimp on each side until just done – don’t overcook. Remove from grill and allow them to cool a bit before serving with zucchini noodles and desired amount of extra vinaigrette. Enjoy! :)

  • 5 Natural Ways to Improve Cardiovascular Health and Blood Pressure

Heart Disease is the leading cause of death in the United States and more than 50% of adults living here suffer from high blood pressure. By implementing minor changes and heart healthy choices, you can decrease your risk of cardiovascular health issues. The 5 steps below will help you achieve a healthier you. Regular Upper Cervical chiropractic care. The Atlas or C1 vertebra relies on soft tissue and ligaments to keep it in place. It is extremely common for the Atlas to become misaligned. Many people never experience pain or discomfort in the upper cervical region; however, they may experience a variety of systematic symptoms from neck and back pain to high blood pressure or even memory loss. A misalignment of the Atlas leads to restricted flow of spinal fluid from the brain to the rest of the body. An upper cervical adjustment is a non-invasive and drug-free procedure that can improve the flow of spinal fluid and help restore the body back to its normal state, eliminating many of the systematic symptoms. Diet plays an important role in heart health. You can improve your heart health by lowering your sodium intake, saturated & trans fats, red meat, and sugar intake. You should base most of your diet around fruits, vegetables, low-fat dairy products, poultry & fish, nuts, legumes, and non-tropical vegetable oils. By practicing healthier eating habits, you can lower cholesterol, triglycerides, and plaquing in the arteries which will in turn improve blood pressure and decrease your chances of a cardiovascular related death or illness. Get regular Exercise. According to the American Heart Association, 150 minutes a week or 30 minutes of exercise 5 days a week can improve your heart health as well as lung function and circulation. A few exercises to consider would be brisk walking, hiking, swimming, fitness class, team sports, or dance. The key to staying active is to find something you like and to change it up to reduce the chances of losing interest. De-stress your life. When you are faced with a stressful situation or emotional discomfort our bodies release adrenaline and cortisol (stress hormones.) This can affect your nervous system as well as your cardiovascular health because the release of these two hormones puts our bodies into “fight or flight mode.” This causes the heart to beat faster and the blood vessels to constrict. Finding ways to alleviate stress in your everyday life can positively impact your blood pressure and overall physical and mental health. The most important thing to decrease stress in your life is self-care. You only get one body in this life; you need to take care of it. Proper nutritional support. It’s important to drink plenty of clear fluids as dehydration can cause your capillaries to constrict. Increasing your omega-3s can have a positive effect on your heart health as well as decreasing stimulant intake, such as caffeine and nicotine. Here at Humfeld Chiropractic & Nutrition Center, we offer a variety of services that can help lower your blood pressure and improve your cardiovascular health. We offer Upper Cervical chiropractic adjustments, which from the above recommendations, helps improve high blood pressure by correcting the flow of spinal fluid from a misaligned Atlas. Next, Bio Energetic Synchronization Technique is a system of balancing the body, mind, memory, and soul energy fields through touch of key pressure points allowing the body to heal by removing interference. Finally, Nutrition Response Testing is a very precise and scientific, non-invasive system of analyzing the body in order to determine underlying causes of ill health. We also have two tests here in the office that can assess the health of your cardiovascular system. The Heart Rate Variability (HRV) Exam measures the change in the time interval between heart beats. The HRV test measures how much the heartbeat varies and can be useful in diagnosing a variety of medical conditions. The Digital Pulse Analysis tests your pulse strength, the elasticity of your arteries, the stress in your small arteries, inflammation in peripheral arteries, resting heart rate, dehydration and blood pressure, aortic value function, arrhythmia, and will give a biological age of your arteries! We believe in reducing the need for pharmaceutical medications by treating the underlying causes. With proper nutritional support you can greatly improve your heart health. We offer a variety of healthy, natural supplements along with essential oils in our office that many of our patients have found useful in treating and/or relieving conditions and symptoms.

  • Your Second Brain?!

The Gut-Brain Axis is one of the least talked about health topics but one of the most crucial relationships in keeping your body-mind health in optimal shape. Most of us know someone, or maybe it is yourself who’s in really good physical health yet has memory issues, digestive problems, mental health conditions, or just cannot seem to lose weight. Chances are the underlying problem is your gut health. Compromised gut health can manifest as many different immune and physical challenges because there is a direct connection between the gut and brain/nervous system. The intestinal wall tissues when inflamed or irritated by a variety of health issues, will not absorb adequate nutrition and will not be able to rid the body of bad bacteria causing an imbalance of the microbiome as well as a lowered digestive response. The gut-brain connection can be easily repaired and improved by eliminating bad foods and introducing good foods. The microbiome in our gut governs many of our body’s key functions and is crucial to our overall health. A balanced microbiome regulates the immune system, metabolism, sustains the gastrointestinal tract, supports mood and brain function, provides critical vitamins and nutrients, and helps us maintain a healthy weight. If you want to lose weight, regain overall physical and mental health and begin to feel better, it’s essential that you balance the microbiome in your gut, one of the most effective ways to do that is by eating fermented foods. Some types of fermented foods include: Sauerkraut – includes bacteria that is crucial in promoting balance within the microbiome. It also includes Vitamin A which helps to heal the gut and offer cardioprotective benefits by lowering cholesterol and triglycerides and reduce platelet stickiness. Kimchee – one of the healthiest probiotic foods there is, with proven support for weight loss as well. Fermented kimchee has been found to have a significant impact on the weight and body fat of overweight and obese Americans. Kimchee has also been shown to lower cholesterol, prevent constipation, and combat colon cancer. It can also help reduce stress, relieve depression, combat osteoarthritis, and fight liver disease. Fermented vegetables – these are natural probiotics as well as natural prebiotics. Kefir – a fermented milk drink resembling a liquid yogurt. Kefir promotes microbial balance, offers incredible support for your immune system, and has traditionally been used to treat tuberculosis and cancer. (Be careful not to purchase Kefir products that have fruits or mixed flavorings already in it as this destroys the live bacteria and adds many grams of sugar. Kefir needs to be plain and unflavored to retain its full health benefits.) Yogurt – like kefir, yogurt has many health benefits but only when it’s packaged, plain, unflavored, and without fruit (although serving with fresh fruit is fine). The health benefits of yogurt are endless, as are its weight-loss benefits. These foods are highly recommended for both weight loss and overall improvements of gut-brain health including: depression, anxiety, brain fog, skin problems, hormonal issues, immune weaknesses, digestive problems, and fatigue. In order to get a clear view of which foods are causing dysfunction to your specific gut-brain needs, it is helpful to seek out a doctor who offers ALCAT testing and Nutrition Response Testing. • The Frequency of the Body

Our thoughts, emotions, and body are all made of vibrating energy. We each have a personal vibration that communicates who we are to the world and helps us shape our reality. Everything has an electrical frequency measured in megahertz. Frequency is defined as a measurable rate of electrical energy that is constant between any two points. When there is frequency, there is electromagnetic potential. In the late 1920s, Dr. Royal Raymond Rife invented the Rife Machine – one of the first frequency generators. According to Dr. Rife, every disease has a frequency. He found that certain frequencies can prevent the development of disease and that others would even destroy it. Nikola Tesla said that if you could eliminate certain outside frequencies with our own electrical frequencies, we would have greater disease resistance. According to Dr. Rife’s and Telsa’s theories, every disease has a frequency, and a substance with a higher frequency will alter the disease that is at a lower frequency. A negative thought can lower your frequency by 12 MHz. When you are thinking of positive thoughts, you can increase your frequency by 10 MHz. It was also found that prayer and meditation will increase your frequency. How Young Living Essential Oils Are Used to Raise Your Frequency The application of essential oils that carry frequencies in the higher range, can change lower, depressed feelings and negative attitudes, to a positive change of attitude and mood. Essential oils and oil blends with higher frequency ranges work in the emotional and spiritual regions. Essential oils and blends that have a lower frequency have a more profound effect on making structural and physical changes. Oils with a frequency of 78 MHz and below are believed to work specifically with the physical body. Inhaling essential oils is particularly beneficial, as the sense of smell is our one sense that directly impacts the amygdala – part of the limbic system; where emotions and memory are stored and released. This is why essential oils can have immediate and profound physiological and psychological effects on the body. This is also the basis of the new technique, Aroma Freedom Technique, that we now offer either in our office or remotely with people throughout the world. This powerful technique has been used with people that have experienced trauma, with people that have relationship problems or want to manifest something positive in their lives. Hopefully, by now, you can see the importance of having your body resonate at a higher frequency. Positive thoughts, prayer, meditation, and Young Living Essential Oils, especially with the use of the Aroma Freedom Technique, can help you increase your body’s frequency. The higher your frequency, the less likely disease can live in your body. Reference: Essential Oils Desk Reference. Seventh Edition. 2016. Life Science Products & Publishing. Pages 372-376.

  • Be More Like The Royal Family

Did you know there are several rules of etiquette which the Royal Family are encouraged to follow? From the order in which they are seated for formal meals, to the way the tiara is positioned on top of the head. While many of us would not enjoy some of these restrictions, there is one that could be of great benefit to a larger population. If you watched the wedding, or have spent any time watching the events of the royal family, you may have noticed that they do not sit with their legs crossed at the knee. Here at HCNC we encourage our patients to avoid sitting with their legs crossed as well. When people are sitting with their legs crossed on a regular basis or for long periods of time, there is potential for throwing the hips out of alignment, which negatively affects postural as well digestive health. When the sacrum (the lower part of the spine) is out of alignment the nerves in that area which control everything from digestive health to reproductive health can cause many other issues because the nerves become disrupted. If you feel like you could benefit from chiropractic care to keep your body and nervous system in alignment, call our office today.

  • The Many Benefits of Young Living’s Thieves Line

With cold and flu season still in full swing and the new world-wide epidemic of the Coronavirus, we feel it is an appropriate time to once again talk about the amazing benefits of using Thieves. Thieves can be used every day for your health, your family’s health, and most importantly your immune system. But first a little history of how the Thieves line with Young Living came about. The history behind Thieves essential oils and cleaners comes from a story that dates back to 15th-century France. The legend talks of four thieves who were known for wearing a special blend of botanicals while completing their stealthy missions. This blend of botanicals was believed to protect them from illness and unsanitary conditions. The inevitable happened when the four thieves were captured. The French authorities who captured them believed there were many benefits to having the secret fragrance the four thieves wore. The thieves were offered mercy if they would disclose the ingredients for this special blend. From this event in history, the same blend of botanicals has been used in the Thieves line with Young Living. This unique blend features Clove oil, Cinnamon Bark oil, Eucalyptus Radiata oil, Rosemary oil, and Lemon oil. The Thieves line from Young Living offers a full range of household cleaning products, personal care products, and oral care products. Thieves not only has amazing cleaning powers on a variety of surfaces and spills but also has a pleasing aroma and antimicrobial properties. Thieves cleaners contain no harmful, nor harsh chemicals yet it has the same ability to clean surfaces of bacteria just as well as, or in our opinion better than, typical antibacterial cleaners. Experiments and studies have shown Thieves household cleaner has the same proficiency as typical cleaners (etc. 409, Lysol, bleach) but what makes it better is that Thieves contain nothing harmful if ingested or if it comes in direct contact with skin. The multitude of uses for Thieves products is amazing. You can use the oil in a diffuser, topically, and internally. Thieves oil has amazing benefits for immune health. Thieves can be used to make hand sanitizer, foaming hand soap, and antimicrobial play dough, just to name a few. Thieves can be added to a plethora of other recipes to aid support to the immune system, such as immunity rollers, cough syrup, chest rub. Certain blends of oils with Thieves can also be used for sinus and allergy relief. The variety of high-quality products in the Young Living Thieves line is a must-have in every household. • Concussions and Traumatic Brain Injuries?

Most people have heard of and are aware of what concussions are, and most likely have heard that doctors across all healthcare fields are finding greater issues with long-term effects in people who have suffered concussions. Still there seems to be a great deal of misinformation or rather a dismissal of the seriousness of this type of injury. Do you think you would take the topic of concussions more seriously if we began using the term: (Mild) Traumatic Brain Injury? To be perfectly honest, that is a concussion. If you have a child who plays contact sports or has had any kind of injury classified as a traumatic brain injury mild or severe, wouldn’t you like to know what long term effects this could have on your child’s emotional, and cognitive health? Would you consider the fact that irritability, attention disorders, or depression are not normal responses and that there are safe therapies which could alleviate and correct the disorder caused by taking a hit to the head? Of course, concussions are not reserved for children only, people of all ages are prone to concussions and the negative aftereffects. Elderly are among the greater population who are likely to suffer falls resulting in concussions. Many times, people will suffer an injury which results in a concussion and will not realize the post concussions syndrome symptoms they are experiencing days, weeks, months, or years later are from that injury. This leads to confusion and challenges in treating the symptoms if people are not educated and aware of these potential issues. As humans we are very good at dealing with pain and disorder, often giving it credit to something else because we don’t attribute a hit to the head as a likely cause. Symptoms of concussion usually fall into four categories: How many people do you know who suffer from these symptoms and just can’t seem to figure out what could be the cause? It’s possible that injuries from any point in life can manifest later as these symptoms. *It is important to note that these symptoms are not the result of damage to the brain. Ongoing symptoms are caused by changes in the function of the brain and nervous system that were triggered by the initial trauma. Upper cervical chiropractic has proven to be very effective in treating many of these symptoms, even if someone has been living with them for many years. Upper cervical adjustments are not the high-speed forcing, popping, and twisting that most people associate with chiropractic care. These adjustments are provided either by hand or by an adjusting instrument and involve very gentle and precise adjustments. A patient often feels very little of the adjustment itself but may experience a dramatic difference in the effects of the adjustment. Adjustments are extremely precise because diagnostic imaging is used to provide the exac t location and degree of misalignment. In addition to upper cervical chiropractic, B.E.S.T. (Bio-Energetic Synchronization Technique), craniosacral therapy and nutritional support can also be beneficial in treating a concussion. B.E.S.T. is a soft-touch chiropractic technique that doesn't involve any twisting, turning, or cracking of the bones. Craniosacral therapy works with the connective tissue and the fascia in the body. Nutritional support can be beneficial to ensure the brain and body are getting the proper nutrients to help heal from a brain injury. If you, or someone you care about, could benefit from chiropractic care for a concussion and any of the underlying symptoms, call our office at (507) 333-5388 or use the form below to leave your information and we will contact you soon! • How Adrenal Fatigue Mimics Illness

Chronic adrenal fatigue is a real condition affecting millions of people around the world. Because the way in which each person handles stress varies so widely it is often overlook or misdiagnosed and therefore treated insufficiently. This condition is often associated with prolonged or intense stress brought on by the tribulations of modern living or an event or illness that is mentally and physically taxing. The difficulty in recognizing and diagnosing this type of disorder is that we often associate the symptoms of adrenal fatigue as “normal” in modern living because many people have become accustomed to being overworked and exhausted. Add into the mix a lack of understanding and information regarding the effects of hormonal imbalance and your immune response. We need to do better at recognizing what healthy and balanced is, and compare all else. The dominating symptom is fatigue – a fatigue that cannot be relieved by prolonged rest or even sufficient amounts of sleep. Many individuals often manage what may be interpreted as a “normal” life with adrenal fatigue. However, a poorly functioning adrenal system leads to an imbalance of hormones that impact immune function, sleep, mood and energy levels. The adrenals sit on top of the kidneys and are responsible for the release of several hormones and neurotransmitters like cortisol, adrenaline, and estrogen, to name a few. You can imagine how having an imbalance of estrogen or progesterone may effect a woman trying to conceive or manage her menstrual cycles, yet this is just one area of life which can be negatively impacted by a decrease in adrenal function. Immune suppression and mental health are major factors in adrenal fatigue. Again these are often overlooked as being associated with the adrenals because we, as a society, attribute many of these dysfunctions as “just part of life.” These are other common symptoms of adrenal fatigue which you may relate to: irregular blood sugar levels, joint and muscle pain (fibromyalgia-like symptoms), indigestion and irritable bowel syndrome, insomnia, depression, mood swings, brain fog and memory loss, anxiety, thyroid disorders, and hair loss. The best way to determine if you are suffering from adrenal fatigue is to have your cortisol and other hormones tested. This is the first step in regaining adrenal health, and in turn regaining that energy and vitality in life which may seem gone forever. Next it’s crucial to have proper nutrition. If your diet is high in sugars, caffeine, and processed carbohydrates, you are increasing the cortisol levels in your body which robs you of your energy. So imagine this downward spiral that so many people get stuck: your exhausted and rely on caffeinated (typically sugar drinks) which increases the release of cortisol which further exhausts the adrenals which makes you more tired. This is a very common and very detrimental cycle. Eating a diet which is low in sugar and processed carbohydrates, along with plenty of water and quality nutritional supplementation to support the adrenal function is crucial in regaining adrenal health, and essentially overall health. So much can be done to heal the adrenals by changing your diet and taking supplements specific to your needs. The only way to determine what those needs really are is by seeing a healthcare practitioner who is educated in nutrition and supplementation. Contact our office here if you think you may be suffering from adrenal fatigue. Being exhausted and suffering from hormonal imbalances is not a normal part of life, you can feel better and live a more optimal life!

  • Investment in My Patients

I am always conscious of the fact that my patients come to see me because they are ready to invest in their health. Sometimes, the investment is spurred by an incident like an injury or an illness. Sometimes it’s the result of a change in attitude. Always, it means that the person is not prepared to stay with their status quo and they know that there is nothing magical about making the changes that are going to help them experience a better quality of life. Last month I started a new training series that is aimed at developing my expertise in the practice of Nutrition Response TestingSM. New research is continually uncovering insights about how to recognize and treat health conditions that are often a result of life style and our American way of life. This training will give me a deeper well of knowledge to draw from and open up new treatment pathways for patients who have complex situations. My professional development is an investment that I’m eager to take and I hope it demonstrates my commitment to my patients, their health goals, and their investment in themselves.

  • Are Antidepressants Really Helping?

Every year, 230 million prescriptions for antidepressants are filled, which makes them one of the most prescribed drugs in the US. The psychiatric industry alone is worth $330 billion even when they do little to cure. Even with all these prescriptions, more than one in 20 americans are depressed, according to statistics from the Centers for Disease Control. Of those depressed, 80% say they have some level of functional impairment, and 27% say their condition makes it difficult to do everyday tasks, activities, and/or getting along with others. The use of antidepressants doubled in just 10 years, from 13.3 million in 1996 to 27 million in 2005. But even with all these statistics, researchers have found that antidepressant drugs are no more effective than sugar pills. Sugar pills are probably more effective because they don’t give off any of the nasty side effects. Both sugar pills and antidepressants work using the placebo effect, which means you take them with the mindset that they will help but actually they don’t do much. Antidepressants come with so many side effects, some of which can be fatal. About 750,000 people attempt suicide every year in the US and about 30,000 succeed. Why would you take a drug that doesn’t do much to help your condition and increases your risk of killing yourself? About ? of people with depression go undiagnosed or don’t get help. Untreated depression is the number 1 cause of suicide. Depression is much more than just feeling sad more than others. One way to check if you or someone you know is depressed, use the “SIGECAPS” method, which stands for sleep, interest, guilt, energy, concentration, appetite, psychomotor, and suicide. If 4 or more of these items are a concern, it suggests major depression. Also consider relevant information from family and friends as well as the mood changes. If you think someone is suicidal, do not leave them alone. Some red flags that a person is at high-risk for self harm include: acquiring a weapon, hoarding medication, no plan for the future, putting affairs in order, making or changing a will, giving away personal belongings, mending grievances, checking on insurance policies, and/or withdrawing from people. If you need help yourself or help with someone else, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, 1-800-273-TALK(8255). In the January 2010 issue of JAMA, it concludes that there is little evidence that SSRI’s (a popular group of antidepressants which includes Prozac, Paxil, and Zoloft) have any benefit to those with even mild depression, they don’t do much more than a placebo, they give worse side effects than it’s worth. Researchers at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine shared 2 major findings: Antidepressant drugs weren’t originally made for depression. They used certain drugs to change the behavior of stressed animals, and concluded that they would be “good antidepressants.” But the molecular changes of stress and depression are not the same which makes them ineffective. Another reason they’re ineffective is because the imbalance of neurotransmitters in your brain may not trigger the same way it was once believed to. Antidepressants focus on the effect of depression and ignore the cause which means someone can’t get better until the cause is handled. A drug is not the answer. In 2008, a meta-analysis published in PLoS Medicine concluded that the difference between antidepressant and placebo pills is very small and that only the severely depressed patients showed any reaction to the antidepressants, even at that it was very small. An interview with Robert Whitaker explained that research suggests that the use of antidepressant can cause a relapse in the long run, turning depression into a chronic condition. Also, antidepressants seem to be changing those with unipolar depression to bipolar depression which means they fluctuate between mania and depression. Many antidepressants may actually make depression worse, when you feel worse your mood will too. Depression can cause many health problems, even more than the food and toxins you’re exposed to daily. Psychiatric drugs kill 42,000 people a year which is 12,000 more people than successfully commit suicide due to depression. Antidepressants are also causing a large list of side effects which are just getting worse: diabetes, problems with your immune system, suicidal thoughts and violent behavior, stillbirths, brittle bones, stroke, even death and the list continues. The link between antidepressants and suicide is so large that they are mandated to have suicide warnings. There are 5 main ways that can help if you are struggling with depression and give nothing but positive effects. Clear your mind and emotions. View depression as your body and life out of balance, not a disease. Some of your emotions you may not even be aware of. The BEST technique can help balance your mind and body. The BEST technique can help bring your problems and emotion through and get rid of them, leaving you feel more energized and happier. Get regular exercise, this normalizes your insulin levels while boosting your endorphins making you feel good. Improve your nutrition. Avoiding sugar and grains will normalize your insulin and leptin levels which impacts depression. Sugar causes chronic inflammation which can wreak havoc on your brain. Take in more Omega-3 Fatty Acids such as krill oil. This is the most important nutrient for brain functioning which prevents depression. DHA is one of these fatty acids and your brain is dependant on it, which means low DHA can cause depression. Go outside and soak up some sun. Getting safe sun exposure allows your body to produce vitamin D which is great for your mood. One study found that people with low vitamin D levels were 11 times more likely to get depression. You can increase your vitamin D exposure by going out in the sun or taking vitamin D3 supplements. So think twice before you fill that prescription. Consult a doctor if you are feeling depressed and make sure if you know someone depressed, watch the signs of suicide and help them if needed. There are many natural ways to help which can be better in treating depression than most antidepressants.

  • Athletes and Chiropractic

With the 2018 Winter Olympics upon us, now is a great time to discuss how athletes can improve their performance by seeking out quality chiropractic and nutritional support. Increasingly professional athletes are making statements regarding their preferred methods of recovery and rehabilitation; not surprising that chiropractors are found amongst the group of trainers and healthcare practitioners travelling with these athletes to support their health and well-being. Olympic sprinter, Usain Bolt said this regarding chiropractic, his health, and performance, “I don’t always win gold medals, but when I do I get adjusted first. Stay healthy my friends.” – Usain Bolt Usain is among many professional athletes who regularly use chiropractic care to stay adjusted and maintain overall health. Lance Armstrong, winner of the Tour De France stated, “I could have won the Tour De France without the assistance of my chiropractor.” -Lance Armstrong When thinking about the systems of the body, how they are all connected, and how disruption to those systems will cause dis-ease, it’s important to look at how they are connected in the most basic sense. The skeletal system is supported by the muscular system and all systems are controlled by the nervous system. When we fall or take a significant hit, stress is put on the skeletal system which then puts added stress on the muscular system. Because the nerves all come from the brain and spinal cord, and out small junctions along the spine, any misalignment will create disruption to those nerves. This in turn manifests in disruption to the normal function of all organs, muscular tissue, and even connective tissues (including scar tissue) of the body because they are all connected and interdependent. Chiropractic adjustments and quality nutritional support can help athletes, at any age, to perform at their most optimal levels by taking away any disruptions in the skeletal system which in turn allows the nervous system to function at its highest and providing excellent nutritional support to further enhance the body’s normal function. If you’d like more information on how an adjustment could benefit you or your loved ones, feel free to set up a consult today!
